Many participants already know exactly that from other areas of their lives: pulling themselves together, persevering, meeting expectations, exceeding their own limits. Especially people with traumatic experiences or chronic stress have often learned to ignore signals from their body or to perceive them only very late.

I want my participants to feel safe and comfortable. That is incredibly important to me.

And at the same time, yoga shouldn’t just be a retreat where we only move within our comfort zone. Development sometimes needs friction. It needs encounter. Sometimes courage, too.

That’s why I don’t believe the crucial question is whether we encounter boundaries in yoga. The more exciting question is: How do we meet them?

When boundaries no longer need to be overcome

In many yoga spaces, the idea arises — often quite subtly — that boundaries are something to be overcome. Something that stands between us and a “better” version of ourselves.

Deeper into the pose.
Stay longer.
Be more focused.

This quickly creates a dynamic of achievement. The body becomes something to be optimized.

In trauma sensitive yoga, this perspective fundamentally changes:

It’s not about crossing boundaries as quickly as possible. Instead, it’s about learning to perceive them in the first place.

This might sound unspectacular at first. For many people, however, this is precisely an enormous challenge. Those who have lived in stress mode for a long time often no longer feel exactly when something is actually too much. Others immediately withdraw from any form of intensity because activation feels threatening. Some fluctuate between overwhelm and complete exhaustion without finding a stable middle ground.

Traumasensitive yoga therefore opens up a different space of experience. Not: “How far can I go?” But rather: “What is actually happening within me right now?”

Suddenly, the boundary is no longer an adversary. It becomes information.

Between avoidance and overwhelm

Sometimes trauma-sensitive yoga is misunderstood — as something exclusively gentle or cautious. As if every form of challenge must be avoided.

However, safety does not automatically arise from avoiding all intensity. Often, it only emerges when we are allowed to have experiences that are challenging — and are held and managed. Our nervous system learns not only through rest, but also by experiencing: Something can be strenuous without us having to lose ourselves in it.

Precisely therein lies the difficulty.

Because many people know challenge almost exclusively in connection with pressure. With the feeling of having to perform. Of pulling themselves together. Of not being allowed to be weak.

And yoga can very easily reproduce this dynamic — even in mindful spaces. Then a pose suddenly becomes a silent proof of discipline. Even regeneration can then unconsciously become performance-oriented. I therefore repeatedly notice, even in myself, how fine the line is between a healthy invitation and subtle overwhelm.

That’s why the question of one’s own intention is so important. Many people with trauma consequences learned early on to adapt, to meet expectations, or to have to function. Their own inner truth often becomes quiet in the process.

In yoga, it can slowly become experienceable again: Am I doing something right now because I truly want to? Or because I believe I have to perform it?

So:

Is it about having to prove something?
Or is something allowed to be explored?

The Quality of Choices

For me, this has become one of the most important aspects of trauma-sensitive yoga: choices.

Not every practice has to be easy. Not every pose pleasant. But people need the experience that they have influence. That they are allowed to adapt, change, pause, or decide anew.

Traumatic experiences, in particular, often come with a loss of self-determination. Therefore, even the seemingly small experience of voluntarily leaving a pose or consciously changing it can be profound.

The exciting thing is: Often, precisely this leads to a greater willingness to engage with intensity.

When no one has to prove anything, honest curiosity becomes possible. Then someone might stay for one more breath — not out of ambition, but out of interest. Not against their own body, but in contact with it.

And sometimes the same practice also means consciously stopping earlier.

Both can be an expression of self-awareness.

Ahimsa and Tapas

In yoga philosophy, we encounter two principles that can seem like opposites: Ahimsa and Tapas. Ahimsa describes the mindful, non-harming interaction with ourselves and others. Tapas stands more for discipline, inner alignment, and the fire of transformation.

Many people unconsciously move between these poles. Either they constantly push themselves beyond their limits — or they avoid any form of friction as soon as something becomes uncomfortable. Both can be protective strategies.

Traumasensitive yoga does not mean choosing one side. The actual practice lies in connecting both: allowing ourselves to be challenged without fighting against ourselves.

That sounds easier than it is.

Because many of us have learned to generate motivation almost exclusively through pressure. Kindness to oneself then quickly feels like giving in. At the same time, constant caution can eventually prevent us from having any experiences of vitality or self-efficacy at all.

Perhaps that’s why precisely this mixture is needed:
Safety and friction.
Compassion and courage.
Pauses and conscious presence.

Playing with boundaries

A word I particularly like in this context is “play.”

Playing means that something can be tried out. That there is no failure. That intensity can be changed. That curiosity becomes more important than performance.

That is the difference between a performance-oriented approach to yoga and a trauma-sensitive one: Not necessarily the external form of a pose — but the relationship we have with ourselves in the process. Two people can practice the same asana. One person struggles against themselves. The other observes curiously what is happening.

From the outside, it might look identical. Internally, it is a completely different experience.

And that is precisely the quality I wish for my classes: Not a space of achievement. But also not a complete retreat from every challenge. Rather, a space where people can encounter themselves again: with more honesty, more choices, and with growing trust in their own perception.

<div class="fusion-image-element"
